classpath setting in windows

It is always better to know before doing something, it’s always a good programming practice. While jumping into setting the classpath , generally you have to get a lot of questions regarding what is meant by classpath ? why we have to set it ? and what actually  a path is?. If u get these questions raised then you are in the good programming practice.

Let’s take a look why these are  linked to JDK and Java.

Path :

It is an operating system environment variable used by the operating system like windows or linux dsearching for the executable files related to Java. So in order to run your programs you have tell to the operating system where your path is.

when you are trying to compile and run the programs in command prompt , then for a beginner is obvious to get an error in their first practice then they will face some basic errors which follows

“javac is not recognised as an internal or external command , operable program or batch file”

this is called compiler error. This error explains that , windows cannot find the compiler which is called as ‘javac’. so you should guide the windows to locate the compiler(javac) by setting up a path

Classpath :

Path is an operating system(OS) environmental variable while classpath is an java environmental variable used by the Java compiler in order to search for the ‘.class‘ files. So in order to compile your java programs , you have set the classpath.

Classpath is setting is defined into two types . temporary and permanent setting. Temporary setting is done in the command prompt while the permanent classpath setting is done through environment variables.

As a beginner when you are trying to compile and run the programs in command prompt , then it is obvious to get an error in their first practice then they will face some basic errors which follows

“Exception in thread main java.lang.NoClassFoundError: HelloWorld”

this is called runtime error which also referred to as exception.
